Lesson details
Most golfers believe they lose balance because they move too much.
In reality, they lose balance because they try to control the movement.
When you attempt to “stay still,” you work against the natural forces of the swing particularly the weight of the club. This creates a disconnect between the body (inner spiral) and the club (outer spiral), pulling you out of balance rather than stabilizing you.
Balance is not a position, it’s a relationship.
A relationship between your centre of mass and how your body organizes itself around it through movement and sequence. When your lower balance point (coccyx) and upper balance point (sternum) work together, the system organizes. When they don’t, the body compensates.
Build this correctly, and balance stops being something you fight… and becomes something that supports every swing you make.
🚨 FOR REAL GOLF ANORAKS ONLY — DO NOT READ UNLESS YOU’RE IN THE 0.01% CLUB.
The Hidden Truth About Balance Points. 99.9% of balance issues in golf do not come from movement,
they come from trying to consciously control it. When you attempt to “hold” balance, the weight of the club begins to control you. Instead of working with the system, you resist it. This is where Newton’s Third Law becomes critical:
For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.
In the golf swing, push and pull are not separate, they are instantaneous and paired. The body (inner spiral) and the club (outer spiral) must work together in this relationship. When they do, movement organizes itself. When they don’t, balance is lost.
The Role of Balance Points
The coccyx (lower balance point) and sternum (upper balance point) are not just visual references, they are control hubs.
• The lower point manages interaction with the ground
• The upper point manages direction and organization of the system
When these points move in sync, the system becomes efficient. When they separate, the body is forced into compensation patterns. What Elite Players Actually Do (Measured, Not Guessed)
Force plate data shows that elite players do not “shift weight” excessively — they manage pressure within a controlled range.
• Pressure moves dynamically — but remains centered enough to control
• The lower body stabilizes while allowing motion
• The upper body responds, it does not dominate
This is why elite players appear balanced at speed.
They are not holding balance, they are constantly re-centering it.
Where Most Golfers Break Down
Nearly every common swing fault is a balance point error:
• Early extension = lower balance point drives forward, upper moves away
• Excessive side bend = lateral separation between upper and lower points
• Over-rotation = upper balance point outruns the lower
These are not isolated faults. They are system breakdowns. Why the Feet Together Drill Works. This is not just a drill, it is a diagnostic. It removes your ability to compensate:
• No lateral excess
• No dominant side control
• No artificial stability
It forces the body to:
• Organize around its centre
• Sequence movement correctly
• Reconnect upper and lower balance points
That is why it feels uncomfortable and why it is so effective. The Spiral Connection. When balance points are aligned, the body begins to spiral naturally. Not because you forced rotation, but because a balanced system moves in harmony across all planes.
This is where:
• Ground force
• Rotation
• Stability
• Flow
…combine into one unified movement.
You don’t lose balance because you move. You lose balance because your system isn’t organized. Fix the balance points and the movement begins to take care of itself.
This is The Spiral Code.
